NEC BIKE SHOW 2009

I had a pleasant day out but was disappointed with Aprilia, Ducati, Moto Guzzi, Honda and Harley Davidson, who were absent! Well done to Norton and Triumph for flying the flag, the bike I would have taken home? Probably the KTM Duke 990 despite what felt like an overly heavy clutch operation (hydraulics are supposed to assist the amount of effort required!)

Victory Motorcycles Best Bitter

We called at the Arrow Mill Hotel Alcester on the way back from Ryans Ryde, finally managing to find it after a couple of failed attempts, but an almost empty car park and no bikes. We had a look around, and a drink, a "bikers" brew in fact!

Two guys arrived on a pair of Rocket 3's then as we were leaving a local chap on an old XJ650 twin, who told us the venue had faded since the floods, pity as the hotel has ample parking and grounds, nice bar and terrace.

safety in numbers (source IAM)

x 15 the increased likelihood of a motorcycle rather than a car being in a fatal accident for every kilometre travelled, in 1990, it was by a factor of nine!

50% the reduction in motorcycle rider fatalities after French road designers introduced a lower rail on crash barriers at key locations

18 the number of months Transport for London intends to run a trial allowing motorcycles, mopeds and scooters to use most red route bus lanes

x 5 motorways are the safest roads, with "A" roads seeing 5 times more crashes per vehicle kilometre.

Probably the best Motorcycle Museum in the UK?

A recent visit to Sammy Miller's Museum was very enjoyable although we hadn't allowed enough time, so will visit again. The staff were very friendly, the atmosphere relaxed and a great variety of machines and memorablia to see.
With all the hype about Aprilia's new RSV4, the rare 1939 AJS V4 Racer caught my eye. I'll post more pics soon.

How long left for the "Bulldog Bash"

If the police applied the same reasoning to football, it's supporters, and it's minority thug element, Britain's national sport would have disappeared years ago!

It looks like the Bulldog Bash has an uncertain future, therefore as I've never been I'll try to make it this year!

Good Service

So impressed with the service, I thought these guys were worth a mention:

http://www.yambits.co.uk/

I'm busy stripping the engine of a yamaha tzr 125, I decided to invest in a rotor puller, yesterday a google search found Yambits (although I think I've seen the company before as they sell on Ebay). I sent them an e-mail asking if the rotor puller they listed on their site would fit the 125, they replied saying it would, I placed the order, later that day I received e-mails notifying me: they'd received the order, took payment, and later despatched the goods. The package arrived first post today, less than 24 hrs after my first enquiry, just tried the tool, rotor now removed.

Soichiro Honda supposedly said:

"I happened on the idea of fitting an engine to a bicycle, simply because I did not want to ride crowded trains and buses"

IF he had been British his comments about buses and public transport would have been much more "interesting"!

SPEED!

petition to stop the government reducing the speed limit.
http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/noNSLreduction/

Coming soon near you..... the national speed limit sign will soon be a thing of the past! Is 10mph really going to make a difference? Do Warwickshire County Council really believe that the idiots who exceeded the previous 60 mph limit and ended up putting their cars in ditches, hedges and wrapped around trees, will comply with the new 50mph limit?

Nanny State strikes again!

Still it could be worse, they might have installed speed humps or those "fun" chicane type traffic flow preventers!

Battery care

I've never bothered with "winter battery conditioning" I've always managed a few ride outs, and if necessary (flat battery) a trickle charge using an old car battery charger. However my son is a different generation, and his toy only gets sunny summer use, so Santa left him a bike specific charger. A recent injury has put pay to any riding for me during January, so I tried the Oximiser on my bikes to "topup" charge, the result was noticeable in an almost instant start up.
